Good morning/afternoon everyone, my name is Ian Gibson, I’m a Junior here at Westminster High School, and I want to be your next Student Senate president. The most prominent reason why I am qualified to be President is my extensive experience. I have spent eight years in Student Government, working with students on the community, county, and state level. The last three years I’ve been a proud member of the Student Senate executive board working as a CCSGA liaison, a class of 2008 representative, and parliamentarian. I’ve worked hand-in-hand with every president in planning and putting-on all the major school events – such as homecoming week, the talent show, and Owlapalooza. Just last year I ran the highly successful Halo 2 tournament, and this year I orchestrated the first revision of the Student Senate constitution in six years. But the truth of the matter is that my experience should not be the deciding factor in your choice of who to vote for. What really matters is what I can do for you if I am elected to the position of Student Senate president. Right now, Westminster High School is facing numerous crises that threaten the integrity of the student body and the very spirit of our school. One of the major issues is freak dancing. This year we saw a massive crackdown by the administration on so-called “inappropriate” dancing. I stand here today to tell you that I will not sit by idly as our generation is censored. I promise you that I will do everything I can to ensure that homecoming is a fun and enjoyable event, and not the laughing stock it has become. Homecoming week is arguably the most spirited time of the year, and as such should be protected. As president, I will make certain that the homecoming dance will be a celebrated event at which students can dance freely, without fear of punishment. Another problem we have today is the potential loss of one of the school’s biggest events. Some of you may remember last year’s Owlapalooza - it was a school wide festival where the community could come out and have fun, while giving the school clubs and organizations a great opportunity to fundraise. Others of you may not have heard of the event at all, and I can’t blame you. Over the past four years, Owlapalooza has been held only twice. The reason for this was a loss of cohesion between the various clubs and a general lack of effort by the Student Senate. An event with the potential to raise tens of thousands of dollars for the school cannot be simply abandoned. With exciting things such as sumo wrestling and live music and eating contests, Owlapalooza could be an amazing school event. As president next year, I will organize a successful Owlapalooza by advertising to the community and student body while inviting all clubs and organizations to participate in the immense festival. A successful Owlapalooza will go a long way towards promoting the spirit of the school and uniting the student body. The final predicament Westminster High School finds itself with is a breakdown in communication between the student body and the Student Senate. The Student Senate is a representative body, with the President serving as a direct spokesperson for the students. Many of the problems in the school today, from discrimination to theft to student rights, can be traced directly to the Student Senate’s growing distance from the students. Early this year, the changing of school colors and selection of the Homecoming theme was done without an iota of student input. As President, I promise to change that. The students of this school will be given a greater power in choosing how we conduct events. At the same time, the voice of the students will be heard when it comes to detecting problems within the school. The executive board will be the first to notify the administration of any discontent in the student body, ensuring the stability and unity of the school. I know what I’ve presented you with today seems like a monumental task, but it can be done if you elect the right person. I stand before you today as not only the most qualified, but also the most motivated candidate. As Student Senate president, I promise to restore the glory of Westminster High School and protect the rights of its illustrious students. It can all be yours with a simple vote for Ian Gibson as Student Senate President. Thank you, and have a great day. (Ian Gibson)
