HUCKABEE A Man for the Future By Ian Gibson A man of vision, a man of promise, a man of change – Michael Huckabee stands as a true representation of conservative values, a candidate that has steadily gained speed in the convoluted Republican primary race. As a former governor of Arkansas for eight years, Huckabee has the executive experience needed to serve as America’s commander-in-chief. With a bevy of Reagan-era economic policies and down-home conservative ideals, Huckabee stands as the best candidate available for the GOP nomination. Mike Huckabee’s platform is filled with innovative solutions to America’s problems as well as a slew of constitutionally founded ideals that are key tenets of GOP doctrine. Economic reform is a key issue, as Huckabee stands for a plan known as fair tax. Under fair tax, the IRS as well as all income and estate taxes would be replaced with a numerous consumer taxes. National budget spending would be balanced and the federal debt reduced under a campaign of steady accounting reform. The increased welfare of the government’s budget and decreased taxes would stimulate consumer activity, benefiting the entire economy. Huckabee also stands as a crusader of modern moral righteousness. As a strong supporter of fetal rights, Huckabee passed an anti-abortion amendment to the Arkansas constitution and plans to present similar legislation on the national level. Marriage is also a strong issue for Huckabee. As a Baptist minister and fervent believer in the sanctity of heterosexual marriage, he opposes any form of homosexual unity in defense of proper morality. When it comes to foreign policy and the war on terror, Huckabee supports a continued military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan. Radical Islamic fascists pose an immediate danger to Americans and must be opposed by any means necessary. In addition, Huckabee sees Israel as a strong ally in the Middle East that must be maintained. Arms shipments and economic aide must be continuously supplied to Israel in order to continue the fight against Palestinian terrorists. On the American home front, Huckabee fights for the rights of every citizen. The second amendment is an important issue for Huckabee, as he is a hunter and the only presidential candidate with a permit to carry a concealed weapon. He believes that the right to bear arms must be protected for all American citizens, and strongly opposes liberal gun control legislation such as the Brady bill. Huckabee also supports a continued push to give all Americans the right to affordable health care without socialized medicine, maintaining a free market for preventative medicine that is both reasonably priced and innovative. Each of these issues has given Huckabee the image of the only truly conservative candidate that fundamentalist republicans can support. As such, Huckabee has continuously gained grassroots support. In the vastly influential Ames Iowa Straw Poll taken in early August, Huckabee gained a starling second place behind frontrunner Mitt Romney. His surprising poll victory as well as several strong showings at republican debates has catapulted him into the top tier of GOP candidates, placing him in fourth place with 9.8% voter support in the pivotal state of Iowa. Huckabee’s image as a down-home politician with strongly conservative values has gained him key financial support with fundamentalist Christians and Reagan republicans. On June 30th, 2007, Huckabee’s campaign posted an enormous monetary gain of $1.3 million, showing him to be a candidate that is exponentially increasing in both political and financial support. With an ever-growing field of supporters and the nearly limit-less field of conservative extremists with deep pockets, Huckabee stands only to vault higher in the polls. As the strongest candidate available for republican voters, Huckabee looks to gain at least a vice-presidential nod, if not the Republican nomination itself.
